MIRI (Feb 22): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak believes that there is no need to review Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, which gives the Malay and natives of Sabah and Sarawak special rights and privileges.
In supporting the statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the matter, PKR Sarawak chairman Roland Engan said there is no need for such review or discussion as it has been enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
“If there are any party that wants to review or discuss on Bumiputera privileges, it would be wise to discuss or review the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and (for it to) be enshrined in the Constitution or made it into an Act, Enactment or Ordinance,” he said in a statement today.
Having said that, Roland said the federal government must also inclusive to all races, religions, cultures and languages under Malaysia Madani concept.
On Tuesday, Anwar said that there is no need to review Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.
He said this in response to a call by Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim for the upcoming Bumiputera Economic Congress 2024 (KEB 2024) to review if the Bumiputera privileges under Article 153 actually benefited the group.
