KUCHING (Dec 9): The new St Peter’s Catholic Church building in Padungan here, alongside the presence of other places of worship in Kuching, underscores the spirit of unity within Sarawak, said Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
The Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development described the new church as “a significant landmark, emblematic of Kuching’s renowned identity as the City of Unity”.
“This church will stand as a proud symbol of harmony, unity and religious tolerance in Sarawak. In my view, such unity remains unparalleled in any other state in Malaysia.
“It marks our progress toward a brighter future, where our people live in harmony, blessed by God. I sincerely hope this spirit endures forever,” he told reporters when met after a visit to the new church today.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Datuk Simon Poh highlighted that the close proximity of the various houses of worship in Kuching is a testament to the respect and acceptance shared by the people of different faiths in the city.
“This fosters a harmonious and united community, reinforcing Kuching’s true status as the City of Unity,” he said.
St Peter’s rector Rev Vincent Chin said when completed, the new church can accommodate up to 1,000 people for a single mass, and will be officially opened on June 29, 2025 with a mass at 7pm coinciding with the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
Also present during Dr Rundi’s visit were Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh, Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, and Department of Veterinary Services state director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud.
