Gerawat says running for office in party elections was normal for any political party.
KUCHING (Feb 13): The six candidates who are entering the race for the four vice-president posts in the Bumiputera wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) are all very capable and proven leaders, said Datuk Gerawat Gala.
The PBB vice president (Pesaka wing) is confident that the delegates at the coming PBB Convention taking place from today to Feb 16 will make the right choice in electing the best candidates for the posts.
“To me, all of them are good leaders but there are only four positions available.
“But I believe that it will be a very friendly contest as it has always been in our past party elections,” he said in an interview with members of the media at his office in Baitulmakmur Building I here today.
PBB vice president incumbents Dato Sri Abdul Karim Hamzah, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi will be defending their positions in the election while Deputy Natural Resources and Urban Development Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh and Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki are also eyeing for one of the four vice president posts.
Gerawat, who is Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), said running for office in party elections was normal for any political party.
“There will always be candidates who throw their hats into the ring for the various posts.
“But what is most important is that after the election, everybody will come together as a strong, solid team,” he said.
The Mulu assemblyman said PBB has always been a very strong and united party.
“This is one of the cultures of PBB that has kept the party intact all these years despite going through various challenges like any other political parties.
“Our strength is unlike some parties where there are members who would break away to form their own party should they lose in their election. That is not PBB,” he said.
He also said that the stability of PBB was also due to the strong leadership of its president Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“He is very courageous and a visionary leader who has managed to see through that we resolve our issues with the federal government, particularly in regard to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“As the Premier, he also managed to increase our state revenue from less than RM7 billion in 2017 up to RM14.2 billion last year.
“These are a few of the indicators that show that our Premier is a good leader.”
As such, he said PBB must continue to rally around Abang Johari and stay united as a team for the progress of Sarawak.
“It is because of the unity of our party that we are able to be the stabilising factor at both state and federal level in the present political climate.
“We have stayed united all these years and that is what we want to preserve and continue in the future,” said Gerawat.
