KAPIT (March 1): An allocation of RM30,000 has been channelled to the local branch of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM).
This was announced by Works Minister and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi in his speech prior to officiating at the opening of PVATM Kapit’s annual general meeting (AGM) at the civic centre here today.
The Kapit MP was accompanied by his political secretary Ambrose Abong Bugek, and they were welcomed by Kapit Resident Elvis Didit and PVATM Kapit chairman Martin Bilun.
In his speech, Nanta also assured the association that he would continue to provide support to programmes meant for the benefit of army veterans.
“Apart from RM30,000, channelled under my Kapit parliamentary grant, I would continue to help PVATM Kapit seek assistance meant for the veterans’ housing project at Bukit Goram here.
“This resettlement area, able to accommodate 247 lots, was acquired by them years ago, using their own money.
“Now, the PVATM needs more money to cover other works including earth-levelling and sub-division of lots,” said Nanta.
The federal minister also mentioned Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s support for the setting-up of Kapit’s own heroes memorial.
“During the 100th anniversary celebration of the Kapit Peacekeeping Treaty, which was held last year, the Premier – in his speech – had supported the proposed heroes’ monument, meant to honour those who had sacrificed their lives for freedom and independence.
“Our suggestion is to name it ‘Teku Bujang Berani’ (Iban Brave Warriors’ Monument),” said Nanta.
On the AGM, the minister commended PVATM Kapit for upholding all the rules and regulations outlined by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
He also expressed gratitude to the former servicemen for their invaluable contributions to the nation.
