KUCHING (March 9): Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has called on young people to actively participate in organisations like Junior Chamber International (JCI) to develop their leadership skills and contribute to society.
He said JCI plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders, and is fundamental in building the skills that these leaders will need.
“Our world needs great leaders, now more than ever. To all youths out there, I urge you to take part in organisations like JCI. Do not just stand by and leave this to others.
“Find the leader in yourselves, whatever your field, whatever your future. JCI can offer opportunities to become the leader you were meant to be and to meet like-minded people who aim to elevate our society to greatness,” he said.
Wee made the call during his JCI Senatorship acceptance speech at the JCI Kuching installation and award ceremony tonight.
Having been involved with JCI since 1995, he said the organisation provides opportunities for young people to contribute to a better future through knowledge, education, exchange, fellowship, and understanding.
“The values that JCI upholds—leadership, service, and community engagement—align closely with my own belief that true progress stems from empowering people,” he added.
Humbled by the honour of receiving the JCI Senatorship, Wee pledged to continue fostering collaboration and empowering youth.
“This is why I believe in JCI. This is why I am humbled and gratified to be given this recognition and this opportunity to contribute further to its vision.
“From here in Sarawak to the rest of the world, I hope to be up to the task, playing a small role in our global, collective future. I pledge to do my very best to fulfil the duty that this recognition comes with.”
He also reiterated his commitment to making Kuching a stronger, more liveable, caring, and more united city, with the support of dedicated individuals.
Among those present was Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.
