SIBU (Aug 4): A two-year-old boy died after he fell into the sewer system through an uncovered manhole at Pusat Tanahwang in Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai here today.
According to a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, 10 firefighters from the Sibu Central Fire Station were deployed to the scene following a distress call received at 6.29pm.
“When the team arrived at the location, the boy’s father informed them that his two-year-old son had gone missing and was believed to have fallen into the sewer system.
“Bomba conducted a search and rescue operation and found the victim floating in the sewer at 6.55pm.
“He was successfully brought out at 7pm. However, the victim, identified as Ehthin Ling, was confirmed dead by a medical officer from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH),” the statement said.
The statement added that the boy’s body was later sent to Sibu Hospital for further action.
The operation ended at 7.30pm.
