KOTA KINABALU (Oct 7): The ‘sigah’, a traditional headgear synonymous with the Kadazandusun community of Sabah, will get exposure among the highest peaks in the world.
This is the hope of four Sabah-born mountaineers who will be among the eight-member Malaysian expedition to the Mount Everest Base Camp at Kala Pathar from Oct 6-21.
Darlien Appolonius, 50, Stanley Catherinus, 45, Shyril Gerald Peter, 34 and Dufy Robert, 29, from Papar, will attempt to reach the 5,644-metre base camp on the Nepal side of the famous Himalayas where they plan to capture a historic photo with the sigah.
They paid a courtesy call on Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee, the chairman of state-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, which is a co-sponsor of their participation in the historic mountaineering outing.
They were given a warm send-off at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport by POIC Sabah officials on October 6.
“We look forward to them reaching Kala Pathar and creating lasting memories of our traditional gear among the roofs of the world. POIC’s support for this expedition reflects our shared spirit of pushing boundaries and going beyond limits,” said Lynette Hoo, Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer of POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd.
