Lau emphasises that SUPP’s position is consistent: the party seeks fair representation for all Sarawakians, whether in Chinese-majority urban areas or rural Iban, Malay, and Orang Ulu constituencies.
SIBU (Oct 9): Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Councillor Kevin Lau, has dismissed claims by Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) secretary George Lam that SUPP is “failing the Chinese community” by not pushing for more Chinese-majority seats in the ongoing electoral delineation exercise.
Lau emphasised that SUPP’s position is consistent: the party seeks fair representation for all Sarawakians, whether in Chinese-majority urban areas or rural Iban, Malay, and Orang Ulu constituencies.
“Unlike DAP, we don’t play racial or populist games just to win short-term political mileage,” he said.
He criticised Dapsy’s approach, noting its strong racial undertone at a time when national unity is paramount.
“As if the ongoing challenges are not enough, Lam appears to be pouring more fuel on the fire with such brinkmanship,” Lau said, calling the tactic dangerous to Sarawak’s diverse society.
He also described the accusations as misleading and politically opportunistic, highlighting a notable contradiction: DAP leaders — most prominently Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen — previously opposed the proposal to increase Sarawak’s total seats from 82 to 99.
While DAP demands more seats for Chinese representation, its senior leaders publicly objected to the same seat expansion under this delineation, Lau said.
“These mixed messages are confusing at best,” he said, clarifying that the redelineation exercise is carried out by the Election Commission of Malaysia, a federal body.
“SUPP’s strength lies not in shouting from the sidelines or mockery, but in delivering results through constructive participation in the state government,” he said.
“We work hand in hand with Sarawak’s Premier to bring development, job opportunities, education, and better living standards for all Sarawakians,” he added.
