KUCHING (April 28): The Sarawak Delta Geopark has been officially recognised as a Unesco Global Geopark, marking a proud and historic milestone for Sarawak and Malaysia’s natural heritage conservation efforts.
Deputy Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh led the Sarawak delegation to receive the recognition on behalf of the state during a certification ceremony at Unesco Headquarters in Paris on Monday.
Unesco Earth Science and Geopark Section chief Kristof Vandenberghe presented the certificate.
Among those present at the ceremony were Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development permanent secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi; Sarawak Forests director Datu Hamden Mohammad; and Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick.
The Sarawak Delta Geopark spans 3,112 square km, comprising 2,685 square km of land and 427 square km of sea, covering Kuching Division and parts of Serian Division.
Unesco Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development.
The prestigious Unesco recognition highlights the Sarawak Delta’s exceptional geological features, including its intricate river systems, coastal landscapes, and rich sedimentary formations that tell the story of millions of years of Earth’s history.
The geopark also encompasses diverse ecosystems such as mangrove forests, peat swamps, and estuarine environments that support a wide range of biodiversity.
Beyond its natural significance, the Sarawak Delta is home to vibrant local communities whose traditions, livelihoods, and cultural practices are deeply intertwined with the land and waterways.
The recognition symbolises global acknowledgment of the region’s outstanding geological heritage, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cultural traditions.
The achievement follows years of dedicated collaboration among local communities, government agencies, researchers, and conservation partners, who have worked tirelessly to protect, conserve, and promote the Sarawak Delta.
Their collective efforts have ensured that the Sarawak Delta is not only protected but also sustainably managed for future generations.
It reflects the strength commitment and partnerships between communities, scientists, and policymakers in achieving a shared vision.
With Sarawak Delta’s new status, Sarawak is expected to gain increased global visibility, attract responsible tourism, and strengthen eco-tourism as well as community-based initiatives, while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
The designation also positions Sarawak as a key destination for green economy and eco-tourism in Southeast Asia.
