Johan faces arguably the toughest test of his young career when he takes on Yoshinari at ONE Samurai 1 this Wednesday.
KUCHING (April 28): Malaysian Muay Thai sensation Johan Ghazali faces arguably the toughest test of his young career when he takes on Japanese standout Shimon Yoshinari at ONE Samurai 1 this Wednesday.
The flyweight bout is scheduled to take place at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, marking a significant step up for the 18-year-old, who is based in Sarawak, as he continues his pursuit of a world title opportunity under the ONE Championship banner.
Johan, widely known as ‘Jojo’, heads into the contest on the back of a solid start to 2026, having secured a decision victory over Myanmar’s Ye Yint Naung at ONE Friday Fights 141 in February.
Originally slated to face American fighter Sean Climaco in January, that bout was scrapped due to Sean’s injury, paving the way for a high-profile clash against Yoshinari, an opponent regarded as one of the most technically gifted strikers in the division.
Yoshinari brings with him an imposing 25-1 professional record and the distinction of being a WBC Muay Thai world champion who has also enjoyed an unbeaten run in ONE Championship.
The Japanese fighter’s résumé includes a notable victory over four-time world champion Yodlekpet Or Atchariya, a bout that showcased his ability to neutralise aggressive, forward-pressing opponents, an attribute that could prove crucial against Johan.
Standing taller than most in the division, Yoshinari utilises sharp distance control, precise footwork and well-timed counters, particularly his trademark left hook, to frustrate opponents. His arsenal is further complemented by punishing calf kicks designed to slow down advancing fighters.
Training out of the renowned Eiwa Sports Gym alongside cousin and world champion Nadaka Yoshinari, Yoshinari represents a new wave of Japanese strikers blending traditional Muay Thai fundamentals with modern technical precision.
For Johan, whose rise has been built on relentless forward pressure and durability, Wednesday’s contest presents a classic stylistic clash.
Jojo’s path to victory will likely depend on his ability to close the distance and turn the fight into a close-range battle, where his elbows and body shots can come into play.
However, Yoshinari’s disciplined approach, lateral movement and counter-striking pose a different challenge compared to Johan’s previous opponents.
If the Japanese fighter succeeds in keeping the bout at range, picking his shots and disrupting Johan’s rhythm, it could make for a difficult outing for the hard-hitting youngster.
Adding to the challenge is the fact that the bout will be held on Yoshinari’s home soil, with the Tokyo crowd expected to be firmly behind their fighter.
With both fighters bringing contrasting styles, power versus precision, the outcome may hinge on whether Johan can impose his trademark aggression or Yoshinari can dictate the tempo with his technical superiority.
Regardless of the outcome, the matchup represents a pivotal moment in Johan’s career as he seeks to prove he belongs among the elite in ONE Championship’s highly competitive flyweight Muay Thai division.
Meanwhile, the event itself is stacked with high-profile bouts, headlined by the blockbuster main event between Japanese superstar Takeru Segawa and Thai icon Rodtang Jitmuangnon for the ONE Interim Flyweight Kickboxing World Title.
The contest carries added significance as Takeru has announced it will be his retirement fight, setting the stage for a dramatic finale in front of his home fans at the Ariake Arena.
The main event rematch between Takeru and Rodtang has been long anticipated following their previous encounters.
After an initial meeting was disrupted by injury and a subsequent clash saw Rodtang emerge victorious, Takeru now has the opportunity to settle the score and potentially bow out with a world title triumph.
