SIBU (May 4): Sarawak Global Taekwondo Association (SGTA) brought pride to the state by winning 10 medals at the 6th Malaysia Taekwondo Federation (MTF) National Championship held at Dewan MBS, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan from April 24 to 26.
The athletes proved their mettle competing at the national level to obtain one gold, three silver and six bronze medals. The team of 14 were selected from First Kick Club and EcoGarden Taekwondo Club with about 90 percent being new faces aged between 10 and 19.
“This is a very proud achievement because the majority of participants are new athletes, yet they were able to provide strong competition at the national level,” said SGTA president Abang Ahmad Zaini Abang Fauzan.
The sole gold medallist was Dayang Zalikha Abang Mohamad Yazid from SMK Tung Hua in the Girls’ Sparring Category (13–15 years).
The three silver medals were won by Nur Nadhira Nasuha Shamsudin from SMK Agama Sibu (Girls’ Sparring 13–15 years), Amira Nadhirah Irfan Farhan from SMK Agama Sibu (Girls’ Pattern 16–18 years) and Hawa Adellia Rosmaini from SK Batu 15 (Girls’ Sparring 10–12 years).
The six bronze medallists were Hawa Adellia Rosmaini, Aish Nazeem Irsyad Mohamad Haindera , Damian Harith Aizryq Bob Azahary, Nurqyra Umairah Halmi, Jesreen Elyatasha Jerry and Donz Tricxan Yehezkiel Donny.
Zaini attributed the results to the potential of the exponents and the effectiveness of SGTA coaches.
