The history-making Sabah karate squad celebrate after their title-winning outing.
KOTA KINABALU (May 6): Sabah delivered a historic performance at the 34th Makaf Under-14, Cadet, Junior and Under- 21 (Pre-Sukma) Karate Championships by clinching 22 gold, 12 silver and 18 bronze medals to emerge overall champions.
It marks Sabah’s fourth consecutive overall title in the national-level tournament.
Making the achievement even more remarkable was the contingent surpassingd its previous best gold medal tally of 19 which was set in 2019. Sabah Karate Association (SKA) secretary general Julian Chin was delighted with the outstanding outing in Klang, Selangor although he said there were rooms for improvement.
“On Sukma (Malaysia Games), we are on the right track but there are still a lot of work to be done.
“Overall, history is created again to achieve 22 gold medals but definitely it was not easy especially when there were over 1,000 participating athletes,” Julian said via WhatsApp yesterday.
The gold winners for Sabah were Keysha Durrani in the U14 Individual Kumite (52kg), Benn Arthur (U14 male Ind. Kumite -45kg), Habib Luthfi (U14 male Ind. Kata), Auni Qaisara Mohd Nazri (U14 Female Ind. Kata), Danish Rayyan (-57kg Ind. Male Cadet Kumite), Henrique Jasper Sevilla (+55kg U14 Male Ind. Kumite), Muhammad Rizki (-55kg U14 Male Ind. Kumite), Zanna Mae Marinus (-42kg U14 Female Ind. Kumite), Audrey Andry (Female Ind. Kumite Cadet -54kg), Russel Azrael Wong (Male Ind. Kumite -50kg), Nur Rasyiqah Razmi (Female Kumite -53kg and Junior Ind. Kata), Theo Noah Thomas (Cadet Male Kumite +70kg), Amirah Shahindah (Female Ind. Kumite +66kg), Muhammad Syahzrullah Halim (Male Junior -55kg), Adeola Fay Robert (Female Kumite U21 -61kg), Ivy Olivera Donny (U21 Ind. Female Kata), Mukhriz Mazlan (U21 Ind. Male Kata), Jericho Jones Jason Jr Jiliko (U21 Kumite -60kg), Syahmi Izzan Saharin (U21 Male Kumite -55kg), Nur Radhiah Fatihah Razmi (U21 kumite -55kg) and Ameera Jnita Liew (U21 Female Kumite -50kg).
The silver medal winners were Nurfarhabatrisya (two), Deanicia Deann, Nur Hidayah Ammanda Madrasid, Raiden Ares Wong, Shawanda Dania, Putra Rayn Nazwan Heryzuan, Xavier Luke Zhaovui, Allyssa Audrey Anthony Tinggi, Audrey Adreana Baking, Al Zovainz Zurizal and the Male Team Kata.
The bronze medallists were Abigail Clay, Zoe Moniesha Marius, Jeffisten Jeffrin, Aeywa Alnicoletta Walter Glen, Yona Adelia, Althaf Azrul, Danish Rayyan, Caleb Wong, Chelsea Olivia De Paul, Chin Xueyi, Bryan Andreas, Khairil Iman Ahmat @ Hamzah, Qaisha Medinah, Irfan Shah, Adlin Viceroy, Mohd Haznil Henry, the Female Team Kata A and Female Team Kata B.
Meanwhile, Selangor Karate-Do Association finished in a distant second place, winning five gold, five silver and nine bronze medals while Johor Karate Association came third with four gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
Over 20 teams from around the country took part in the championships which offered a total of 51 gold medals.
