KUCHING (June 1): The Bintulu Transitioning Industrial Cluster (TIC), which is scheduled to be officially launched on June 11, will further strengthen Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for clean industries and future-ready investments, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said Sarawak had achieved a significant global milestone with Bintulu being recognised by the World Economic Forum as one of only 36 TICs worldwide.
“Bintulu stands as the sole representative from Malaysia within this prestigious global network. We are attracting a new wave of green investments, advanced manufacturing industries and low-carbon technologies,” he said in his Hari Gawai message.
Abang Johari said the comprehensive 10-year Sarawak Gas Roadmap is designed to leverage the state’s natural gas resources in a strategic and sustainable manner across four key growth hubs in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu and Kuching.
Pointing out that Sarawak’s strategy is clear, he said the state is moving aggressively up the value chain through downstream industrial development, petrochemical expansion and value added manufacturing.
Since December 2024, he said Sarawak had exported more than one million metric tonnes of methanol to markets across the Asia-Pacific region.
Rather than exporting raw resources alone, Sarawak is ensuring that its gas wealth generates industrial growth, high-value employment and technology transfer, he said.
“As of April 2026, the 500-megawatt Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant in Miri has achieved approximately 45 per cent progress and remains on track for completion by the end of 2027,” he enthused.
According to him, this facility will serve as the primary energy hub for northern Sarawak and will play a critical role in supporting the state’s growing industrial and economic activities.
He added that the proposed Tanjung Embang Deep Sea Port represents another strategic step in positioning Sarawak as Borneo’s future global gateway.
“This transformative development forms part of a larger integrated masterplan that includes a new international airport, low-carbon industrial zones, logistics infrastructure and future energy export facilities,” he said.
Abang Johari also said the return of Bintulu Port marks a significant milestone, further strengthening its strategic importance and enabling Sarawak to manage the critical maritime asset in a more coordinated manner.
To enhance regional connectivity, state-owned airline AirBorneo is set to launch its regional jet operations this July, he said.
“In line with our aspiration to position Sarawak as a strategic trade and investment hub in the ASEAN region, the Sarawak Ports Authority is also developing an Integrated Ports Development Plan, which will coordinate the development of all ports through a ‘port cluster’ approach to optimise port functions, strengthen logistics connectivity and support hinterland development,” he said.
On the state’s effort towards green economic transition, the premier said there will be reduction in the export of timber as Sarawak emphasises on environmental sustainability.
However, he said the government encourages downstream industries of planted forest for the dual purpose of producing biomass and carbon sink, in line with turning Sarawak into a green economic hub in the region.
“All these great achievements and aspirations will only become a reality if we continue to unite, maintain stability and preserve the trust and harmony that have long been the strength of our state,” he added.
In conjunction with this year’s Gawai Dayak celebration, Abang Johari called on Sarawakians to renew their resolve to build a more advanced, smart and sustainable Sarawak for future generations.
According to him, the transformation being implemented today is not only about economic, technological and infrastructure development, but also about expanding opportunities, improving living standards and ensuring that every Sarawakian shares in the prosperity built together.
“With strong leadership and a strong spirit of unity among the people, I am confident that Sarawak will continue to emerge as a progressive and competitive region at the Asean and international levels.
“Let us move forward with full confidence, courage and the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ for a brighter future for Sarawak. I would like to wish all those celebrating, Selamat Hari Gawai. Gayu Guru, Gerai Nyamai,
Lantang Senang Nguan Menua. Oha! Oha! Oha!” he added.
