DALAT (June 11): The success of the Community, Parent and Private Sector Involvement (PIBKS) Guidance Class programme has proven that strong collaboration between schools, parents and community can significantly improve students’ academic performance, said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
The State Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development said the programme had become a shining example of how collective commitment could help students excel and create better opportunities for their future.
“The success we celebrate today did not happen overnight. It is the result of dedication, perseverance and close cooperation among teachers, parents, community leaders and local stakeholders who shared a common goal of improving educational outcomes for our children,” she said at the Dalat District Education Office PIBKS 2026 Guidance Classes Appreciation Ceremony at the Dalat Welfare Complex yesterday.
Fatimah noted that the programme, which involved 12 learning centres, 115 students and 38 educators, had contributed significantly to Dalat’s impressive 98.43 per cent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 Layak Mendapat Sijil (LMS) achievement, with 108 students obtaining the qualification.
She commended Dalat district education officer Magdaline Jon for her vision and leadership in expanding the initiative from its early days at SMK Dalat to a district-wide programme involving secondary and feeder primary schools.
“Many thought it would be difficult to bring together teachers, parents, community leaders and village committees for a programme like this.
“However, through determination and teamwork, what once seemed impossible has become a remarkable success story for Dalat,” she added.
Fatimah said the next challenge was to improve not only the pass rate but also the quality of students’ results by producing more high achievers in future examinations.
She also highlighted the importance of addressing learning gaps among students at an early stage, particularly those who have yet to master basic literacy and numeracy skills.
According to her, early intervention programmes implemented in primary schools have helped identify and support students facing learning difficulties, including those who may have dyslexia.
“As we continue to strengthen educational support, we must ensure no child is left behind. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, succeed and realise their full potential,” she stressed.
To support the continuation of the PIBKS Guidance Class programme, Fatimah announced an allocation of RM38,000 while another RM20,000 has been approved to continue literacy intervention efforts at SK St John.
She also urged village development and security committees (JKKKs) to utilise part of their existing allocations to support educational activities in their respective communities.
Fatimah said the district’s development should not be limited to physical infrastructure alone, but must also encompass education, culture and poverty eradication.
“When our children succeed academically and acquire the necessary skills, they will be better equipped to improve their lives and help break the cycle of poverty. Education remains one of the most effective tools to transform communities,” she said.
Also present were Dalat District Education Officer Magdaline Jon, Felicia Serai Usop, who represented Dalat district officer Mathew Hubert, Temenggong Hendi Suhai and Dalat deputy district education officer Eduine Kusai.
