Hajiji and Fahmi witness the signing ceremony of the MoU between DBKK and MCMC at SICC on Tuesday.
KOTA KINABALU (Dec 3): The collaboration between Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) aims to transform Kota Kinabalu into a smart, sustainable and progressive city, positioning it to compete on a global scale.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor stated that as the capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu is not merely an administrative centre but also an economic, tourism and technological innovation hub, a source of pride for all Sabahans.
He explained that the MoU signed on Tuesday between DBKK and MCMC represents a significant step toward realising Sabah’s vision of driving sustainable development through digitalisation.
“Kota Kinabalu will serve as a model smart city, showcasing how technology can enhance people’s lives and support the state’s economic growth.
“Through this MoU, several large-scale projects will be implemented, including comprehensive digital connectivity, public safety measures, and smart infrastructure such as the installation of closed-circuit cameras (CCTVs), digitalised administration and services to improve efficiency, reduce bureaucracy, and promote a digital culture and cashless economy,” he said.
He made these remarks at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between DBKK and MCMC at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Tuesday.
Also present was Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the MoU marks the beginning of a new era of development for Sabah, with Kota Kinabalu serving as a benchmark for other cities in the state.
“This effort will not only benefit the city but also the entire state of Sabah. By establishing Kota Kinabalu as a digital and innovation hub, we are opening avenues for cross-sectoral collaborations, including tourism, education, and business.
“This will attract more foreign investments, create job opportunities, and enhance the standard of living for our people,” he added.
In terms of state government initiatives, RM41.75 million has been allocated for the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, the Sabah Skills and Training Centre (SSTC) and the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre to conduct language proficiency courses and skill training in science, technology and innovation next year.
“This aligns with the state government’s commitment to emphasising the digitalisation agenda, including skills in science, technology, and innovation. Additionally, RM10.5 million has been allocated for digitising the State public service next year.
“This includes the Human Resource Management System (SM2), enhancements to the Sabah Digital Portal and Services, and other initiatives supporting public sector digital transformation.
“To improve internet coverage across the state, the state government plans to install Starlink internet technology in 300 locations throughout Sabah that currently lack internet access next year,” he said.
