KUCHING (Oct 15): Nine players, including five Malaysians, advanced by walkovers in the boys’ singles first round of the 18th ATF Asian U14 Series Sarawak, which kicked off today at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) tennis centre.
The Malaysian players moving into the second round without playing are third seed Fawwaz Kamaruzzaman, his brother Muath Kamaruzzaman, Nicholas Ham, Ethan Law, and Eli Smith.
They will be joined by Jakub Borowski of Poland, sixth seed Eugene Hadiwidjaja of Indonesia, seventh seed Matthias Go of the Philippines, and Kim Donghyeok of South Korea, who also received walkovers.
Among those who fought through their opening matches were fourth seed Adrian Setiawan of Indonesia, who beat Akid Mohammad 6-1, 6-1; fifth seed Brennan Wiyanto of Indonesia, who defeated Singapore’s Lim Yan Teng 6-3, 7-5; and Thailand’s T. Lukianchikov, who beat Au Yu Heng 6-2, 3-1 (retired).
Other winners included Muhammad Firman, who edged China’s Liu Bohan 7-6 (4), 7-5; Kalix Ng of Hong Kong, who swept past Singapore’s Ryan Pooh 6-0, 6-2; and Nguyen Tuong of Vietnam, who blanked Hong Kong’s Theodore Su 6-0, 6-0.
In the girls’ singles, Brunei’s fourth seed Goh Wei Rou started strong with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ting Zhi Hui, while India’s third seed Aaliyah Ganguli came from a set down to overcome I. Mohammad 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8).
Also progressing to the next round were China’s Xu Yitian, American Steffi Richardson, and Australians Isabelle Chiew and second seed Alice Cadosi.
