KUCHING (Oct 15): An Indonesian man and woman were each sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here today for possessing counterfeit Malaysian ringgit amounting to RM138,920.
Judge Musli Ab Hamid convicted Wawan Riduanto, 31, and Emi Diansari, 37, on their own guilty plea to a charge under Section 489C of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same law.
The Section provides for a jail term which may extend to 10 years, upon conviction.
They committed the offence on Jalan Serian-Tebedu at around 4.45pm on Oct 8, 2025.
In the same courtroom, a second Indonesian man and a local deliveryman claimed trial to the same charge.
Abang Mohammad Firdaus Abang Abdul Malek, 29, was granted bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties, while Indonesian labourer Hendra, 32, was ordered to remain under remand at Puncak Borneo Prison pending the outcome of the case.
The court fixed Nov 13 for case management.
Based on the alleged facts of the case, police stopped Abang Mohammad Firdaus and Wawan, who had pulled over by the roadside on a motorcycle and were acting suspiciously while heading towards the Malaysia-Indonesia border.
Upon questioning, they allegedly told police they were on their way to meet Hendra in a nearby forest area.
They then allegedly led the police to the location, where Hendra was found sitting and holding a dark blue and red bag.
A search on Hendra allegedly uncovered various denominations of Malaysian banknotes suspected to be counterfeit, amounting to RM138,920.
Police arrested the three men and Emi on suspicion of conspiring to possess the suspected counterfeit currency found in Hendra’s possession.
Deputy public prosecutors Ruvinasini Pandian and Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar appeared for the prosecution.
Wawan and Emi were unrepresented, while Abang Mohammad Firdaus and Hendra were represented by lawyer Patrick Voon.
