Reddit user discovers hidden KL gems by walking and using public transport, urging everyone to explore the city slowly
SOMETIMES, the beauty around us only becomes apparent when we slow down and explore it closely. A Reddit user recently shared how choosing to see Kuala Lumpur through a different lens on a random Saturday completely changed her perspective of the city.
“Usually, I just go to the same malls and mamak stalls. This time, I simply drove around and stopped whenever something looked interesting,” she wrote.
During her spontaneous exploration, she discovered a 40-year-old wanton mee stall, a tiny temple tucked between two shophouses, and a vibrant market she had never known existed, all just a 10-minute drive from her home.
“Beyond the skyscrapers, the city has layers of hidden gems that you only notice when you explore without rushing,” she said, recommending that everyone try this at least once.
In the comments section, one local suggested acting like a tourist occasionally by booking an Airbnb and using public transport to navigate the capital.
Many users agreed, noting that walking and rail travel are the superior ways to truly experience the soul of Kuala Lumpur.
“The best way to explore the city is not by car. You won’t see much. Take public transport and walk aimlessly,” user Redcarpet1254 suggested.
Echoing this sentiment, FillTall6449 claimed that hitting the pavement brings unexpected surprises and a genuine sense of fun.
“Put on comfortable sports shoes, park your car at a train station or somewhere in KL and start walking. I love exploring on foot; everything slows down, and you start noticing the old and new posters and signage,” he said.
The discussion also triggered a broader conversation regarding urban planning, with users highlighting Malaysia’s potential as a more walkable nation.
“I think our country is perfect for aimless walking and discovering hidden corners, provided it has a proper, pedestrian-friendly structure,” DashThatOnePerson stated.
