KUCHING (March 13): The launch of The Intimate and Ultimate Guide to Kuching Gastronomy will take place at Think & Tink, Jalan Tabuan, on March 15.
This comprehensive guide, which delves into the rich culinary heritage of Malaysia’s first Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy, was recently previewed at ITB Berlin.
The initiative is supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
Unesco Creative Cities Network Kuching strategic director Karen Shepherd described the book as a deep dive into Kuching’s food scene, exploring its history, anthropology, culture, and biodiversity.
“It is to tell a story about Kuching’s food sector and the many communities that have created it.
“In fact, this is the story of Sarawak, told through the lens of our greatest obsession – our gastronomy,” said Shepherd, who is one of the authors.
She added that the project has been a privilege, offering insights into Sarawak’s unique food systems, from indigenous land tenure to bustling markets and thriving coffee shops.
“Now we are also seeing an exciting period of expansion and experimentation and we hope that this book is a testimony to that, told through the many talents of Kuching’s many creative industries,” she said, expressing her hope that the book will become the definitive guide to Kuching’s food culture.
Co-author and KINO Magazine publisher Marian Chin described the book as “a great example of Kuching’s creativity.”
Featuring photography by Jee Foong, Roland Chiu, Kelvin Chan, Kenny Lee, Siaw Kang Jong, Chew Swee Kee, and Chien Lee, alongside illustrations by Daphne Siaw and Garry Kong, the book was printed by Infografik Press.
“It demonstrates exactly why Kuching is considered a Creative City, not just in gastronomy but in every field,” she said and deemed it appropriate for the launching to take place at Think & Tink, a creative hub right in the city centre.
Attendees at the launch will also get to experience On Reciprocity, an exhibition supported by Yayasan Hasanah.
“This is the culmination of a collaborative programme of workshops and shared practices, held recently in Kuching and which continues for three months, so catch it soon even if you can’t make it on Saturday.”
The public is invited to meet the team behind the book and get a preview, with limited copies available for sale.
