KUCHING (Feb 11): Private companies and corporate bodies should establish relevant policies meant to fully support women in today’s workforce.
In making this call, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri suggested several initiatives such as the provision of subsidies or financial relief for the employees to send their children to daycare centres.
“The government employees are given such subsidies, but the private companies can also offer financial relief or develop policies to support working parents.
“This is not solely the responsibility of the government or parents. Companies should also implement policies that help facilitate parents to send their children to daycare centres or nurseries,” she said at a press conference here today.
Also present was by Sabah Assistant Minister for Community Development and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Flovia Ng.
Nancy, who earlier officiated at the ‘2025 Borneo Zone International Women’s Day’ event at the UCSI Hotel, also suggested the companies to establish childcare centres at their respective workplaces to support mothers returning to the workforce.
“This would demonstrate the company’s commitment to empowering working women, especially those with families.
“It is an issue that we frequently highlight to raise awareness,” she added.
She did not rule out the possibility of a 60 per cent decline in female workforce participation due to childcare responsibilities.
“Therefore, it remains a priority for the government to encourage women to re-enter the workforce by providing comprehensive support in the childcare industry.
“The care industry remains a key focus, encompassing both childcare and eldercare, providing opportunities for women to participate. The establishment of more workplace childcare centres or facilities is essential to support working women.
“In fact, last year, the caregiving training programme under the Ministry of Human Resources, managed by the Institute of Social Malaysia, recorded 385 female participants. This year, the target is 485 participants.”
Nancy added that this issue would be brought up at the upcoming Asean Meeting for discussion with the key representatives from other countries in the region.
Also present was Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus.
