Fauziah and Chin show their joint police report over the fabricated wedding invitation.
KOTA KINABALU (May 20): Kapayan assemblyman Chin Tek Ming and former Bengkoka candidate Fauziah Stephens have lodged a police report against a TikTok account for circulating a fabricated wedding invitation that falsely linked them.
The fabricated invitation, which has gone viral on social media, falsely claimed that Chin and Fauziah would get married at Sacred Heart Cathedral here on May 23.
The Parti Warisan (Warisan) politicians called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation into possible offences, including criminal defamation and misuse of network facilities under existing laws.
They also urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to immediately investigate those responsible for circulating the fake wedding invitation.
They described the posting as “false, malicious, and defamatory”, saying it was deliberately created to ridicule and embarrass them while inciting public misunderstanding.
According to them, the content amounted to character assassination carried out through social media with reckless disregard for personal reputation, public decency, and religious sensitivities.
“The fabrication is not only absurd and illogical on its face, but also deeply offensive from a religious perspective,” the duo said in a joint statement.
They pointed out that Fauziah is Muslim and said the false depiction of a wedding ceremony in a church was provocative and disrespectful towards religious sensitivities in Malaysia’s multireligious society.
The duo stressed that such conduct should not be normalised under the guise of political satire or anonymous online behaviour, adding that freedom of expression does not extend to spreading malicious falsehoods, defamatory content, or religious provocation.
Besides Chin and Fauziah, several other Warisan leaders have also been targeted by false social media content circulated on the same TikTok account.
The account also shared fabricated obituaries for Sulabayan assemblyman Jaujan Sambakong and Usukan assemblywoman Munirah Majilis.
