KOTA KINABALU (June 21): The Sabah National Tabletop Con 2.0 opened at the Sabah Art Gallery on Saturday, doubling in size from its inaugural edition and drawing regional participation from across Southeast Asia.
The two-day event features 20 tabletop creators and vendors from Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, positioning Sabah as an emerging hub for the region’s growing tabletop gaming and creative sector.
State Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah (KePKAS) permanent secretary Datuk Josie Lai said the event reflects evolving tourism trends, where interactive entertainment and creativity are becoming key attractions.
“This showcase is proof that Sabah is ready to play a leading role in the regional creative economy.
“Tabletop gaming is undergoing a global renaissance, and by positioning Sabah as a hub for enthusiasts, we are opening doors for creative entrepreneurship and niche tourism,” she said.
Organised by the Sabah Trade and Tourism Office Singapore with #Laiplayleow and D’Hiejrah Global, the convention is supported by KePKAS, the State Ministry of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia, and the Sabah Art Gallery.
A key highlight is the ‘My Trip in Sabah’ Board Game Competition, which incorporates the state’s geography and cultural landmarks into gameplay.
The event also features a cross-border exhibition match between champions from Malaysia and Singapore.
The convention also serves as a platform for indie designers and publishers to showcase their work and engage directly with visitors.
Lai noted that participation has increased significantly, with vendors rising from eight last year to 20 this year.
The event, expected to draw more than 2,000 visitors, is open to the public, alongside a community night picnic programme at the gallery grounds.
