KUCHING (July 19): A total of 210 participants comprising teachers, school staff, parents, and students were educated on scam prevention strategies during a cybercrime awareness programme, held at Dewan Lanjak Entimau in Julau on Friday.
Jointly organised by the Julau District Police Headquarters and SMK Julau No.2, the Commercial Crime Safety Awareness Programme aimed to raise awareness of various forms of online fraud, particularly those affecting the school community.
Participants received detailed explanations on the latest fraud tactics employed by online scammers, including impersonation of government officials, fake investment schemes, and e-commerce-related crimes, according to a Sarawak Information Department report.
They were also introduced to QR Code 3.0, a new initiative aimed at disseminating information related to commercial crimes, along with details on the 997 Hotline, the official reporting channel of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC).
An ‘Online Fraud’ talk conducted by Carlos Fredick, a representative from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), featured the introduction of “AIFA Chatbot”, an artificial intelligence-driven platform that helps the public identify and understand fraud signals.
He encouraged both students and parents to utilise the app as an educational tool in today’s digital age.
Julau District Police Chief DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah emphasised that the programme focused on educating and raising awareness among educators, parents, and students to better prepare them for the increasingly complex threat of cybercrime, which affects all layers of society.
He stressed the importance of participants sharing the knowledge and insights gained with their families and longhouse communities to promote mutual safety.
“Such efforts need to be expanded so that the community is not easily deceived by scammers,” he said.
