MIRI (May 28): Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man has encouraged more performers, including singers and comedians to bring their shows to the city, describing it as an ideal destination for live events and performances.
In a press statement, Chiew, who is also Miri MP, said events such as stand-up comedy shows and live performances not only entertain the public but also contribute positively to the local tourism industry and business community.
He expressed delight that Malaysian comedian Douglas Lim had chosen Sarawak for two of his comedy shows in Kuching and Miri, both of which received strong audience support.
“Political comedy definitely plays an important part of Malaysia’s arts and cultural landscape, while also reflecting the value of freedom of expression in a democratic society,” said Chiew.
He added that humour and comedy can serve as constructive reminders for public leaders to remain open to feedback and differing views.
“These types of comedy are also a great way to spread awareness on important issues faced by Malaysians in society or government. It is fun and entertaining, especially after a long day at work, but also very educational and may inspire change,” he said.
Chiew said he appreciated Lim’s style of humour, particularly his commentary on current issues and governance, which he described as relatable to many Malaysians.
As part of efforts to promote Miri’s tourism sector, Chiew said he would also bring Lim around the city to visit tourist attractions and enjoy local food.
“Through influential people like Douglas Lim, I hope to showcase Miri’s tourism to more people,” he said.
He welcomed collaborations with performers and influencers planning to visit Miri, noting that influencer marketing plays an increasingly important role in promoting tourism destinations to wider audiences.
“Miri is a well-connected city with close proximity to Brunei and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The city is known for its welcoming community and vibrant atmosphere, making it a great destination for live events and performances,” he said.
He added that event organisers and artiste managers interested in bringing performances to Miri could reach out to him for assistance and further information.
Lim’s stand-up comedy show in Miri is scheduled for June 12 at 8pm at the Curtin University Malaysia Auditorium.
