MIRI (May 9): A proposal is underway to establish a direct bus service between Miri Airport and Brunei International Airport to enhance cross-border travel.
According to Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man, aside from connecting both airports, this would strengthen the flow of international and domestic tourists between Malaysia and Brunei, and allow them to explore attractions in both destinations more conveniently.
“The proposed bus service will bridge the 160 kilometre distance through a journey of about three to four hours, offering tourists greater flexibility and accessibility,” said the Miri MP in a statement yesterday.
“Brunei International Airport serves as a major transportation hub for international travellers, and a direct land connection to Miri could help boost tourist arrivals into northern Sarawak.
“By directly connecting to Miri, we can tap into opportunities to increase tourist traffic and further elevate Miri as a global tourist destination,” he said.
Chiew also said meetings had been held with officers from the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak and federal Transport Ministry to discuss the logistics of implementing the service.
“Presently, there are no scheduled bus services operating between the two airports, with travel largely dependent on private vehicles.
“The proposed direct bus service is expected to operate weekly, with suitable frequency focused on convenience for travellers.
“This service is intended to cater to domestic and international airline passengers, local and foreign tourists, cross-border workers between Malaysia and Brunei as well as local residents and students,” he said.
Chiew also pointed out that bilateral discussions with officials from Brunei’s Transport Ministry were being planned to advance the initiative.
“I will personally follow up on these developments to ensure the service becomes operational in the near future,” he added.
