MIRI (March 29): A total of 53 families in Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Permyjaya here have more cause for celebration this Hari Raya, having had gas pipelines directly connected to their kitchens.
These 53 homes are included in the second phase of the gas pipeline installation project, which is expected to cover 125 houses in total.
The project, led by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), is part of the state government’s effort to modernise residential energy infrastructure.
State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who visited the housing area this morning, emphasised the need to expedite installations before the festivities.
“We want to complete this as soon as possible so families celebrating can benefit in time. The same will be done for Gawai in June,” he said.
During his visit, Lee inspected seven houses along Lorong 4-5 at QTC to check on progress and hear feedback from residents.
Mohd Fakhrull, 40, whose home had the gas pipeline installed in December last year, expressed gratitude to the government for the upgrade.
“Before this, we had to buy two gas cylinders a year, but now we don’t have to worry about that expense anymore,” he said, highlighting the system’s convenience and savings on costs.
Another resident, Nor Mastura Japar, 49, who has lived in QTC for ten years, shared a similar sentiment.
“As someone who makes and sells kuih, I used to rely on one gas cylinder per week, with each costing about RM26.
“Now, I can focus on making kuih without worrying about the gas running out,” she said.

Residents have welcomed the upgrade, citing improved efficiency and the reduced hassle of frequent cylinder replacements.
“People who have received the installation are very happy because it is not only convenient but also provides stronger gas power,” Lee added, noting that some families have reported shorter cooking times due to the improved gas supply.
According to Lee, the 125 households involved in the second phase of the project are now ready to be supplied with gas.
However, residents need to ensure they have stoves compatible with underground natural gas pressure before Petros can proceed with final inspections and connections.
Petros has assured that all installations will meet safety standards and has committed to expediting the next phase for Gawai.
