KUCHING (March 13): Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air have agreed to mount additional flights between March 26 and April 6 to accommodate the surge in travel demand during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
He said his ministry had reached out to the airlines to ensure Sarawakians can reunite with their families without facing travel congestion.
“The three airlines will be adding extra flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu to ease travel congestion.
“This is to ensure that Sarawakians can reunite with their families and loved ones to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said in a statement today.
He said Malaysia Airlines would be adding one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching, Kuala Lumpur-Miri, Kuala Lumpur-Sibu, and Kuala Lumpur-Bintulu routes on March 28 and 29; one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching route on April 4 and 5; and one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Miri, Kuala Lumpur-Sibu, and Kuala Lumpur-Bintulu routes on April 5 and 6.
For AirAsia, it will add one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching route from March 29 to April 4; one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Sibu route from March 30 to April 4; and one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Miri route from March 28 to April 4.
The airline will also add one additional flight daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Bintulu route from March 30 to April 2; one additional flight on the Johor-Sibu route on April 4; and one additional flight daily on the Johor-Kuching route from March 31 to April 4, he said.
Lee added that Batik Air will be adding three additional flights daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuching route as well as two additional flights daily on the Kuala Lumpur-Sibu route from March 26 to 31.
“These additional flights would help ease travel congestion, ensuring that Sarawakians can return home more conveniently during the festive period,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the airlines for their cooperation and encouraged travelers to book their tickets early.
“The Ministry of Transport Sarawak will continue to collaborate with major airlines to ensure sufficient flight capacity to meet public demand,” said Lee.
