KOTA KINABALU (Nov 16): Muhammad Khalil Helmi and Ormilla Octavia Codday Nyadau were named Malaysia Sports School Sabah (SSMS) 2024 Sportsman and Sportswoman respectively.
The announcement was made during SSMS Excellent Appreciation Ceremony dinner here on Saturday.
Sabah’s young and talented track athlete Khalil impressed in 2024 where he was selected to represent the country in the 21st Asian Under-20 Athletics Championship in UAE as well as in the World Under-20 Athletics Championship in Peru.
Khalil, 20, was a semifinalist in the 400m event in the Asian under-20 meet.
The one-lap sprint specialist collected a silver in his other international outing last year in the Cahya Mata Malaysian Open Athletics Championship in Pahang.
At national level, Khalil won two silver medals in the 400m and 400m mixed relay events in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak.
The Kuala Penyu lad also won a gold in his pet event in the POWKL/MAWP/MILO2024 Open Championship.
Khalil was represented by his mother Napisah Akil in receiving the award on the night.
As for SSMS Sportswoman award recipient Ormilla, the Sarawak sprinter won three bronzes (100m, 200m, 4x100m) in Sukma 2024.
In the National School (MSSM) championship, she won gold in the girl’s under-18 100m event and a silver in the 200m.
At international level, Ormilla, 19, made the 200m semifinal in the Asian under-20 meet in UAE while winning silver in the Cahya Mata Malaysian Open meet.
Ormilaa of Kg Long Jagen, Miri was accompanied by her elder sister Isabellevianney Milan Nyadau at the ceremony.
Datu Asrah Datok Ambas, the senior assistant director of Student Development Sector, Sabah Education Department presented the main awards to the winners.
SSMS principal Haji M. Rahim Md. Lair and its Parents-Teachers Association chairman Rahimat Dasiman were also present.
For the record, the ceremony to celebrate SSMS students’ excellent achievement throughout 2024 featured categories for Academics, Pre-University, Synergy of Student Athletes Characters, Co-Curriculum and Sports.
Meanwhile, the ceremony guest-of-honour Datu Asrah hailed the combined efforts from all that led to the outstanding achievement of SSMS students.
“An event such as this is not merely an award presentation, but a manifestation of a culture that appreciates and recognises the efforts of all parties who have contributed to the school’s success.
“These parties include the student athletes themselves, academic teachers, sports coaches, parents and all those who have been directly or indirectly involved in improving the quality and performance of both academics and sports.
“Every achievement celebrated tonight is the result of the collective efforts of teachers who patiently educate, student athletes who work tirelessly, sports coaches who train consistently and parents who continuously pray for and provide unwavering support.
“I am confident that with unwavering dedication and continuous commitment, Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Sabah (SSMS) will continue to achieve even greater success and become a distinguished and respected educational institution,” said Datu Asrah in his speech.
Rahim, on the other hand, explained starting 2013, SSMS focuses on four sports namely hockey, aquatic sports for diving and swimming as well as athletics.
Women football was introduced in 2015 before archery and weighlifting programmes were offered two years later in line with the needs of developing national-level athletes in the country’s focus sports.
“All these sports continue to be active and serve as proof that SSMS is not only committed to producing talented athletes but also plays an important role in continuously supporting the national sports development agenda,” said Rahim.
