KUCHING (May 18): Sarawak suffered a five-wicket defeat to Kuala Lumpur in the Malaysia Cricket Association (MCA) Men’s 50 Overs Inter-State Premier Cup 2026 cricket tournament held at the Bayuemas Oval in Klang on Sunday.
The defeat resulted after Kuala Lumpur chased down a target of 155 with 12.3 overs remaining.
Batting first, Sarawak struggled to gain momentum against Kuala Lumpur’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for 154 in 38 overs.
The Sarawak batsmen found it difficult to build meaningful partnerships as Kuala Lumpur consistently picked up wickets to keep the innings under control.
Despite the modest total, Sarawak’s bowlers produced a spirited performance to defend the score as they managed to claim five wickets behind Kuala Lumpur’s pursuit to briefly keep themselves in contention.
However, Kuala Lumpur’s experienced batting lineup remained composed during the middle overs and steadily accumulated runs to reach 155 for five in 37.3 overs.
The MCA Men’s 50 Overs Inter-State Premier Cup is among the top domestic cricket tournaments in Malaysia organised annually by the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA).
Played in the traditional 50-over one-day format, the competition features the country’s strongest state teams competing in the Premier Cup division while developing sides compete in the Challenge Cup division for promotion.
Teams in the Premier Cup include Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Perak, Kelantan, and Sarawak.
The tournament provides an opportunity for Sarawak cricketers to measure themselves against established cricketing states in the country.
Matches are played at the country’s leading cricket venues such as the Bayuemas Oval in Klang, YSD-UKM Oval in Bangi and STC Oval.
The Bayuemas Oval itself has hosted numerous international and Asian Cricket Council tournaments.
To further grow interest in domestic cricket, matches are also streamed live through digital platforms such as Malaysia Cricket Live, enabling supporters from across the country to follow the action in real time.
National selectors are closely monitoring performances to identify players for the national team.
Cricket will be contested at the 2027 SEA Games when the competition is expected to be staged at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Petra Jaya.
