Eisya Syifaa Embran and Eisya Shaqia Embran
MIRI (May 18): Two siblings from Kampung Meritam in Limbang have brought pride to Sarawak and Malaysia after clinching the Silver Award at the Global English Language Olympiad of Southeast Asia (GELOSEA) 2026, held in Singapore in April.
Eisya Syifaa Embran is a Form 3 student at the Malaysian National Gifted Centre, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), while her younger sister, Eisya Shaqia Embran, is a Year 3 pupil at SK Lubok Tekurok, Limbang.
The duo had earlier secured the Gold Award at national-level competition, earning the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the international stage.
Their father, Embran Ahmad, described the achievement as proof of the potential and determination of rural students to compete internationally despite limited exposure and resources.
“This achievement on the international stage was truly unexpected. Although they did not win gold in Singapore due to fatigue and lack of experience, they have already shown their capabilities.
“Honestly, this is a proud achievement for children from interior schools. Limited infrastructure has never been an obstacle for them to succeed at a higher level,” he told reporters in Limbang on Saturday.
A total of 105 Malaysian participants competed in the event, which tested advanced English language skills, including comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and essay writing.
GELOSEA 2026 also featured participants from several countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, India, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam, making the competition highly competitive.
