KUCHING (Nov 19): The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development’s (MEITD) plan to collaborate with Cambridge University Press and Assessment (CUPA) is still in the finalisation stage.
“The ministry is indeed in discussions with CUPA to see their expertise and support in developing the assessment instruments for DLP students, as these talks are ongoing,” it said in a press statement today.
The statement was issued to clarify details regarding a recent statement dated Nov 18 on the ministry’s collaboration with CUPA for the Standardised Assessment for Dual Language Programme (DLP) in Sarawak.
“While the (Nov 18) statement accurately reflects the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that Sarawak’s standardised assessment is aligned with international benchmarks, we would like to clarify that the MEITD is committed to ensuring the best possible assessment framework for the DLP Sarawak programme.
“This is why we are working closely with various stakeholders, including Sarawak’s higher learning institutions, state Education Department, private schools and once finalised, CUPA.
“We want to clarify in the event of any confusion caused and appreciate the continued support of all involved in this important initiative to enhance the quality of education in Sarawak,” said MEITD.
During his ministerial winding up speech at the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Monday, Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said Sarawak will implement the Standardised Assessment for DLP students statewide in Primary 6 starting next year and for Form 3 starting in 2028.
“The first DLP Sarawak cohort will reach Primary 6 next year, providing an ideal time to assess the programme’s impact and make improvements where necessary,” he said.
For Primary 6 students, he said the ministry is currently developing the instrument of assessment in collaboration with CUPA-owned institutions of higher learning, state Education Department and private schools in the state.
“This collaborative effort will allow the first Standardised Assessment for DLP Sarawak at Primary 6 to be carried out next year, covering Science, Mathematics and English subjects.”
Sagah also said that the assessment serves as an early preparation to help students build the skills and confidence required to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
Furthermore, he told the House that Sarawak is committed to the continuity of DLP Sarawak for as long as it is needed and relevant.
First implemented in 2020 starting with Primary 1, DLP Sarawak is now in its fifth year of implementation with the first cohort of pupils in Primary 5.
