Chiew says now with the Madani Government focusing on rebuilding the economy and solving past problems, the Opposition should support stability, rather than create more unrest through rallies and slander.
MIRI (July 25): The Opposition should play a more constructive role in Parliament, instead of constantly stirring political instability in their desperate bid to return to power, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.
In a statement, he criticised the planned ‘Turun Anwar’ rally set for tomorrow, calling it ‘an irresponsible move, only reflecting the opposition’s obsession with power’.
“After more than two years as the Opposition, they still fail to act like a responsible and functioning Opposition.
“They are not willing to wait for the next general election and are instead, trying to topple the government through backdoor means,” he said.
Chiew said that instead of offering policy alternatives or voicing important issues, the present Opposition continued to exploit racial and religious sentiments to divide the people.
“Even in Parliament, some of them never offered constructive ideas. When given the chance to raise local issues, they would often use the opportunity to blindly attack the government.”
According to Chiew, the Opposition had never presented any alternative budget despite several national budgets being tabled since the Unity Government took over.
He also pointed out the lack of a serious shadow cabinet.
“This shows they are not serious about improving the country. They are only interested in power for their own gain.”
Chiew further criticised the Opposition’s track record when they were in power, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the people had to raise white flags due to financial hardship, while the government at that time pushed for state elections despite health risks.
“Now that the Madani Government is focused on rebuilding the economy and solving past problems, the Opposition should support stability rather than create more unrest through rallies and slander.
“Democracy should be about healthy competition during the elections, not changing governments through manipulation.
“Let’s move past political drama and work together for a more united, stable, and progressive Malaysia,” said Chiew.
