KUCHING (July 19): Neighbourhood watch sectors are being established across the Batu Kitang constituency, beginning with areas around 3rd Mile before expanding to 6th Mile and 10th Mile, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang.
He said the first sector had already been set up in the Mile 3 area, covering locations including Arang Road, Mile 3 Bazaar, Seng Goon Garden and areas near Timberland Medical Centre.
Lo said the initiative aims to encourage residents to work together in reporting suspicious activities, preventing crime and maintaining safe and peaceful neighbourhoods.
“The establishment of these neighbourhood watch committees are assisted by the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) so that the people in the neighbourhood can look out and take care of one another.
“We’ve set up the neighbourhood watches in Mile 3, and now we’re going to set up two more sectors, that are in Mile 6 and Mile 10 – and each sector will be led by police officers,” he said during the Neighbourhood First Community Engagement dialogue at Mile 10 Kota Padawan Community Hall here yesterday.
He added that, besides police and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel, community leaders in Batu Kitang had also been included in the neighbourhood watch WhatsApp groups to strengthen communication and coordination.
The dialogue aimed to strengthen cooperation between enforcement authorities and residents in crime prevention and neighbourhood safety efforts.
During the programme, representatives from Padawan district police headquarters also demonstrated the use of the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) mobile application to community leaders.
