Chong says that workplace accidents not only impact employees and their families, but also place a financial burden on the employees.
KUCHING (March 25): It is the government’s policy to improve the work environment and reduce workplace accidents for workers in Malaysia, said National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Chong Chieng Jen.
In highlighting this, the Stampin MP stated that workplace accidents not only impact employees and their families, but also place a financial burden on the employees.
“This includes not only the medical costs, but also the costs of absenteeism from work, reduced production, and replacement of employees,” he added in a statement.
As such, Chong said Niosh is committed to promoting occupational safety and health through training programmes and awareness campaigns, aimed at both employers and employees.
In this regard, he took part in a three-day Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Coordinator course, which kicked-off here today.
“It gave me a better understanding of the course offered by Niosh,” he said.
Chong explained that under the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022, workplaces in Malaysia must appoint an OSH Coordinator to ensure compliance with safety regulations and create a safer working environment.
He also pointed out that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with five or more employees are required by law to appoint an OSH Coordinator.
“The OSH Coordinator plays a crucial role in coordinating safety and health matters at the workplace, ensuring compliance with regulations, assessing risks, and fostering a safety-conscious culture.
“Having an OSH Coordinator can significantly improve workplace safety, reduce accident risks, and ensure compliance with regulations to avoid penalties,” he said.
Chong thus reiterated that workplace safety is a shared responsibility, and urged companies to take proactive measures to protect their employees.
