KUCHING (Feb 17): Former Democratic Action Party (DAP) member Leon Jimat Donald says he has chosen to align himself with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) because of his firm belief that Sarawak’s destiny must be shaped by Sarawakians, and not dictated by external influences.
“GPS is the only coalition that operates free from Malayan (Peninsular Malaysia’s) political control, enabling Sarawak to chart its own course.
“I stand with those who are steadfast in defending our rights; not out of convenience, but out of conviction,” he said in a statement, issued in connection with his attendance at the PBB Convention here last weekend, as an observer from the party’s Balai Ringin branch.
Leon, son of former three-term Sri Aman MP, the late Jimmy Donald, recently joined PBB after being partyless since his resignation from DAP in 2022.
He was once was once DAP Sarawak deputy chairman, and had contested as a DAP candidate in Simanggang throughout the past three state elections.
According to Leon, many of those attending the PBB Convention here were very surprised to see him there wearing PBB colours.
On the convention, Leon hailed it being more than ‘just a political event’, as it was a powerful demonstration of solidarity, strength and an unyielding commitment to Sarawak’s future.
He said the energy throughout the convention was electrifying.
“Members, both seasoned and new, welcomed me with warmth and enthusiasm, a testament to the unbreakable bonds that we share as Sarawakians.
“The message was clear – PBB remains the backbone of Sarawak, and GPS is the only coalition that truly puts Sarawak first.
“The PBB Convention was not merely a political assembly; it’s a clarion call – a reaffirmation that Sarawak must take charge of its own future, ensuring that its rightful place within the Federation is upheld with dignity and determination.”
On those who might question his political move, Leon said politics must never be a pursuit of personal ambition; rather, it must be regarded as a duty to serve, protect and advance the interests of the people.
“My decision is not about party allegiance, but it is about principles, about securing Sarawak’s autonomy, prosperity, and dignity.
“I did not join PBB as a passive observer, but to be an advocate, a champion, and a fighter for Sarawak’s cause.
“To those who hesitate or criticise, I ask – are we stronger when we are divided, or when we stand united behind a leadership that is unwavering in its commitment to Sarawak?
“My hope is that PBB leads the charge in reclaiming what is rightfully ours.
“Education and healthcare autonomy must not remain distant ambitions; they must be implemented in full.
“The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) must be honoured – not selectively, but comprehensively.
“A stronger Sarawak means a stronger Malaysia – but only if we’re recognised as the equal partner as we’re always meant to be,” he elaborated.
