KUCHING (Nov 9): Sarawak welcomes any new investment opportunities into the state, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
In stating this, Abang Johari expressed his gratitude to Bursa Malaysia for its ongoing efforts to attract investors to Sarawak, through events such as the East Malaysia Palm & Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (emPOC) in 2023 and the East Malaysia Palm Oil Forum in August this year.
“This year has been a positive one for Malaysia where the Ringgit has strengthened, and foreign investment continues to grow throughout the country,” he said at the launching of the Bursa Marketplace Fair 2024 at Vivacity Megamall here, today.
Abang Johari’s speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who represented him at the event.
The fair that is being held here this weekend, he said, underscored the importance of investor education and awareness, and business relationships.
“The federal Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) had stated that Sarawak attracted RM4.2 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of this year, with more green investments expected,” he disclosed.
This would drive job creations and open up new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in Sarawak, he emphasised.
Meanwhile, Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, said the fair marked its first being held in Sarawak.
“The first fair was held in Penang in 2019, then in Johor Bahru last year, and more recently in Kota Kinabalu in May this year.
“Although this is our first Marketplace Fair in Sarawak, our initiatives in the Land of the Hornbills go beyond today’s event,” he said in his opening speech.
He pointed out that Bursa Malaysia has actively engaged Sarawak’s market participants, collaborating on initiatives such as the 2023 emPOC held in Kuching and recent discussions on Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and Environmental Sustainability Goals (ESGs) with Sarawak-based companies.
He also highlighted the Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX) activities in Sarawak, noting that the state’s first Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) traded by BCX, were achieved through a Sarawak-based project.
The fair themed ‘Invest Today, Powering the Future,’ runs from Nov 9 to 10, featuring 13 vendor booths, curated talks, and interactive sessions, designed to enhance financial literacy and investment skills.
Attendees can explore various investment assets, including stocks, exchange-traded funds, derivatives, and gold.
Key stakeholders from the Securities Commission Malaysia, investment banks, brokers, and public-listed companies would be present to provide advice on investing fundamentals, technical analysis, and strategic planning.
Besides capital market education, visitors can enjoy activities and games, with prizes available for those who register.
The event is free and open to the public, offering a valuable opportunity for Sarawakians to invest in their knowledge and future prosperity.
