KUCHING (April 20): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has revealed that he initiated the formation of Kuching City FC to address longstanding issues in Sarawak’s football scene.
He noted that Sarawak football had been plagued by various problems in the past but efforts behind and following the formation of the club have paid off as it has now culminated in the club reaching the final of the Malaysia Cup for the first time ever.
“I tell you the real story. Sarawak football had problems before which prompted the initiative to set up Kuching City FC,” he told reporters during a press conference held in conjunction with the GPS Convention 2026 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here on Sunday.
He was responding questions from reporters who wanted to know his thoughts on Kuching City FC reaching the final of the Malaysia Cup for the first time on Saturday night.
He said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government had supported the club from its early days, including providing facilities and financial assistance.
“We helped in the formation of this club. We provided facilities for Kuching City FC to train and we also supported financially,” he said.
Abang Johari stressed that proper financial backing was essential to ensure the stability of the club, particularly in ensuring players were paid on time.
“If players are not paid their wages (for example), who wants to play for the club?” he asked.
“Alhamdulillah, what we have done has worked!” he exclaimed.
On whether a public holiday would be declared if the team wins the final, he said the matter required careful consideration due to its impact on the economy.
“If I declare a holiday, some people may not like it because it involves double pay and it can affect the economy,” he explained.
While some would welcome a public holiday, others particularly businesses might be impacted, the premier added.
Kuching City FC will face Johor Darul Ta’zim FC in the final at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on May 23.
