KOTA KINABALU (Aug 12): The public, including in Sabah and Sarawak, is advised to refer to registered news agencies for accurate and verified information.
Chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, stated that agencies like Bernama and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) are among the primary sources to ensure the public receives truthful news.
“This step is crucial to prevent the public from being influenced by inaccurate, slanderous, or politically motivated news circulating on social media.
“In an era of fake news and various allegations, it is the responsibility of government news agencies to deliver accurate news to the people while ensuring coverage and information conveyed are truthful,” he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, on Tuesday.
The visit aimed to introduce himself as the Bernama chairman, effective since 1 September, to the Head of State of Sabah.
Elaborating further, Wong said Bernama is committed to enhancing the quality of news coverage in Sabah, aligning with significant upcoming developments in the state, including the State Election (PRN) and various current issues.
He stated that Sabah is an important state, and the national news agency will improve coverage through various initiatives to ensure every development is conveyed to the people swiftly and accurately.
“I have pledged to His Excellency to enhance coverage in Sabah and explore measures to ensure reporting quality continues to improve.
“As the government news agency, we will remain a trusted news source for the people, thereby strengthening confidence in the information delivered,” he said.
Wong’s visit, which was his first since Tun Musa took office as the 11th Governor of Sabah in January, was accompanied by Bernama Sabah Bureau chief Fadzli Ramli, journalist Noorazlina Jindeh, and photographer Zamain Singkui.
Tun Musa, a former Chief Minister of Sabah, was sworn in as the State’s Governor for a four-year term beginning Jan 1, 2025. He succeeded Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who served four terms from Jan 1, 2011, until his tenure ended on Dec 31, 2024.
