MIRI (April 26): A total of RM900,000 has been allocated by the federal government to upgrade the infrastructures at three key community and tourism sites here – the Saberkas Night Market, Tamu Muhibbah and the Open Air Market.
Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man said that the allocation under Malaysia Budget 2026 meant to enhance functionality, safety and overall appeal of the public spaces.
“These locations are important gathering points where local businesses operate, providing opportunities for traders while promoting Miri’s products, produce and food,” said the Miri MP in a statement.
He added that each site would receive RM300,000 for maintenance and upgrading works.
Chiew said the improvements should benefit the traders and residents, while strengthening the sites’ role as tourist attractions.
“The Saberkas Night Market is popular for offering local delicacies; Tamu Muhibbah features community-based products; the Open Air Market serves as a hub for traditional food, fresh produce and daily necessities.
“The upgrades will make these locations more functional, attractive and sustainable in the long term.”
Chiew said he had frequented these places since young and continued to engage with the traders and visitors.
“From there, I observed the need for upgrades and raised the matter to the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (Kuskop).
“My appreciation goes to that ministry for approving the allocation,” he said, adding that maintenance works would be carried out by Miri City Council.
“We will monitor the progress to ensure upgrades are implemented promptly and efficiently,” said Chiew, adding that the initiative reflected ongoing efforts to keep these community spaces vibrant for residents and visitors alike.
