KOTA KINABALU (April 18): Sabah Chapter chairman of the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia, David Chan, is deeply disappointed by the recent conduct and focus of certain debates during the Sabah State Assembly sitting.
“As a representative of the National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah Chapter), I urge our elected assemblymen to approach their duties with greater professionalism and a serious commitment to addressing the pressing concerns of the rakyat.
“We are currently facing a global economic crisis exacerbated by the ongoing US trade war and the rise in export tariffs. These external pressures are contributing to inflation and increasing the cost of living for ordinary Malaysians. At a time when the people are grappling with rising food prices and economic uncertainty, we expect our leaders to act proactively, responsibly, and in unity,” Chan said in a statement today.
He said one of the most urgent issues is food security. “We call upon the government to implement bold and strategic policies to reduce our dependence on imported food by investing in local agriculture, supporting our farmers, and building a resilient domestic food supply chain. Strengthening food sovereignty is no longer a choice — it is a necessity.
“Additionally, we urge lawmakers to enact and enforce stricter rules and regulations to safeguard consumers. From price control mechanisms to transparent food safety monitoring, consumer protection must be a national priority. The voice of the people must be heard, and their well-being must be defended,” Chan said.
As the economic storm continues, he said it is imperative that all lawmakers set aside political differences and work hand-in-hand for the prosperity of the state and nation.
“The rakyat are watching. Let us not disappoint them,” he said.
