KOTA KINABALU (July 8): The culinary arts team from Keningau Vocational College (KVC) has emerged as the champion of the school student category of Innovation Development Through Educational Activities 2024 (IDEA 24) competition in the food technology field.
This in-person event was organized by the National Youth Skills Institute (IKTBN) Bukit Mertajam, Penang, from July 6 to 7.
The team was awarded with the champion trophy, RM1,000 cash prize, a gold medal and certificates of achievement. The team consisted of teacher Ibrahim Sa’min, and three second-year students aged 17: Thiery Christian Thomas, Carl David and Judd Ryan.
They have produced a burger patty inspired from the cuisines of Nyonya which is a unique subculture resulted from the earlier assimilation of Chinese immigrants and the Malay society dates back to centuries ago. This was done to introduce Western food with local cultural elements that can help to preserve traditional recipes.
The team believed that this idea might be successful since burger is a popular choice of snacks or meals for many Malaysians especially the younger generation.
This team was one of the 18 finalists in the school student category of the competition which only accepted a maximum number of 500 entries.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli officiated the event, visited the exhibition booths and presented awards to the winners.
The team leader, Thiery Christian, expressed his gratitude to those who supported them in this competition in any means.
KVC director Nordin bin Akup, congratulated the team for their achievement and hoped this could motivate other students to continuously explore new ideas by leveraging the vocational skills they learnt from the college.
