KUCHING (May 20): A 54-year-old Samarahan housewife lost RM126,910 after falling victim to a part-time job scam found online involving the promise of assembling hair tie tags from home.
Kota Samarahan acting police chief DSP Barry William said the victim came across a Facebook page called ‘Malaysia Handcraft Centre Wang Ing’ on March 25 before being connected through Messenger to an individual known as ‘Wang Ing’.
“She was later instructed to communicate via WhatsApp with a person identified as ‘Cikgu Liew’, who claimed to represent Nikko Packaging Co. Ltd China and offered her a home-based job attaching tags to hair ties.
“The victim was promised payment of RM4,000 for every completed box and was informed that four boxes containing tags and 2,000 hair ties would be delivered to her home,” he said in a statement.
However, before receiving the items, she was instructed to make several payments for alleged postage fees, deposits, accountant commissions, and import costs.
Barry said the victim transferred RM126,910 through 48 transactions to multiple bank accounts between April 1 and May 15.
“No items were ever delivered and the victim continued to be asked for additional payments.
“Realising she had been cheated, the woman lodged a police report at 12.15am today (Wednesday) for further action,” he added.
Initial investigations found that the victim had been deceived through an online part-time job offer advertised on Facebook before communications continued through Messenger and WhatsApp.
Police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
