KUCHING (June 1): Sarawak has attracted RM116 billion in investments across the primary, services and manufacturing sectors over the past five years, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said the achievement reflects growing investor confidence in the state’s economic policies and development agenda, while reinforcing Sarawak’s position as an attractive destination for high-value investments.
“These investments have a huge impact on the socio-economic development of Sarawak, particularly in providing business and employment opportunities for the locals,” he said.
He said this during a courtesy call on Malaysia’s Ambassador to South Korea, Datuk Mohd Zamruni Khalid, at the latter’s official residence in Seoul, South Korea.
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, said private investment remains a key driver of growth under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He added that Sarawak hopes to attract more South Korean companies to invest in the state, noting that firms such as OCI and Lotte have already established a presence in Sarawak’s advanced manufacturing sector.
“I hope more South Korean companies will follow the footsteps of companies such as OCI and Lotte and invest in Sarawak,” he said.
During the courtesy call, Awang Tengah discussed collaboration between the Embassy of Malaysia and federal agencies in South Korea, namely the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), to further promote Sarawak as an investment destination for the new economy such as renewable energy, aerospace and advanced manufacturing.
The Malaysian Embassy together with Mida and Matrade are committed to support Sarawak’s aspiration in line with the federal government’s strategy to make Sarawak the hub for aerospace and semiconductor.
Also present during the courtesy call were Awang Tengah’s wife Dato Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Deputy International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh and Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment advisor Dato Sri Naroden Majais.
