SIBU (May 26): The Sarawak government remains committed to strengthening the state’s maritime ecosystem through education, technological innovation and talent development, in its aspiration to position Sarawak as a competitive regional maritime training hub.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datu Adana Jed said the vision would be driven through the adoption of modern technology, digital innovation and sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
He said graduates from the Maritime Training Institute-Pelita Mas Laut are expected to play an important role in realising the state’s aspirations.
“Today’s graduates are not only completing their courses, but are also beginning their responsibility as custodians of the future of the nation’s maritime industry.
“With the training and skills they have acquired, I am confident they will become agents of change capable of elevating the maritime industry in Sarawak and Malaysia to greater heights,” he said.
He said this when representing Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn during the Graduation and Certificate Presentation Ceremony for the Marine Engineering Rating and Marine Engineering Officer programmes organised by the Maritime Training Institute-Pelita Mas Laut (Sibu) here today.
He noted that the graduates had undergone intensive training which required discipline, mental resilience and strong commitment throughout the course.
According to him, their achievements reflected the institute’s continued success in producing competent, highly skilled and ethical local maritime workforce.
Adana also revealed that MEITD had sponsored 14 participants to undertake the Marine Engineering Rating or Marine Deck Apprentice courses for 2026.
“This is the second consecutive year that the Maritime Training Institute-Pelita Mas Laut has been selected to receive sponsorship under MEITD.
“The sponsorship reflects the ministry’s commitment to producing highly skilled manpower in line with the nation’s aspiration towards a sustainable digital economy,” he added.
He expressed hope that all participants would make full use of the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and contribute towards the development of the nation’s technology and innovation sectors.
He pointed out that the maritime industry is currently facing major challenges, including climate change, navigational safety, global competition and the demand for new technologies.
“However, every challenge presents an opportunity for innovation and transformation within the industry,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed that maritime graduates have broad career opportunities in sectors such as shipping, logistics and maritime security.
He added that the state government would continue to provide support through career development programmes, industrial incentives and international collaborations to further strengthen the sector.
He also expressed appreciation to the instructors, institute management, parents and family members for their continuous support and sacrifices throughout the graduates’ training journey.
