MIRI (May 14): Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala recently received a courtesy call from the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) delegation.
Gerawat said the visit on Tuesday was aimed at discussing and exchanging views on the development of the international education sector as well as the management of foreign students in Sarawak.
He added that the discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration to attract more international students to pursue their studies in the state, including matters related to the management of study permits and student passes.
“As a state with its own immigration autonomy, Sarawak has specific requirements and procedures that must be complied with by foreign students, in addition to federal immigration regulations,” he said in a statement.
The Mulu assemblyman also stressed that close cooperation between EMGS, the Sarawak government and educational institutions is essential to ensure that the study permit application process is carried out in an orderly and student-friendly manner.
“I believe that a strong collaborative relationship between the state government and relevant agencies such as EMGS can open up more opportunities for educational development and enhance Sarawak’s position as a competitive international education destination,” he said.
EMGS is an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia that serves as a one-stop centre for managing the admission of international students to higher education institutions in Malaysia.
Its key roles include managing student visa applications, promoting Malaysia as an international education hub, facilitating the welfare of foreign students, and ensuring a more efficient and systematic student admission process.
