KUCHING (Dec 13): The Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, has expressed his aspiration to transform the Sarawak Esports Expo (Sarex) into one of the world’s most prestigious esports expos.
To realise this vision, he announced that his ministry will work closely with the Sarawak Esports Association (Sesa) to elevate Sarex into a flagship annual event and to be included in the state’s tourism calendar.
“Next year, we plan to raise the prize pool From RM80,000 to RM100,000, a significant increase that will attract even more international teams and sponsors.
“Together, we will ensure that this platform continues to grow, inspire, and lead,” he said at the opening of Sarex 2024 (Sarex24) at MBKS Event Ground today.
Abdul Karim’s text of speech was read by his deputy Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
“Since the inaugural Sarawak Esports Expo in 2018, I have watched with pride as this event grew into a beacon of opportunity and innovation.
“What began as a local initiative has now transformed into a platform that attracts not only participants from across Sarawak and Malaysia but also international teams from Southeast Asia.
“This evolution highlights the potential of esports as more than just a competition. It is a dynamic industry that empowers youth, drives technological advancement, and promotes Sarawak on the global stage,” he noted.
“Esports is more than entertainment – it is an economic driver, a platform for education, and a tool for unity. It offers young people not only the opportunity to compete but also to develop skills in technology, teamwork, and leadership.
“As a state that values innovation, Sarawak is committed to nurturing this growing industry.
“Through initiatives like Sarex24, we aim to empower our youth by providing platforms to showcase their talent; position Sarawak as a hub for esports in Southeast Asia; and integrate esports into our tourism and creative industry strategies, attracting visitors and investments to our state,” said Abdul Karim, who is also Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.
“To the esports community, your passion and dedication are the heart of Sarex24. You have shown us that gaming is more than just a pastime; it is a bridge that connects people, cultures, and ideas.
“To the international teams present, thank you for joining us. Your participation reflects the unifying spirit of esports and reinforces Sarawak’s position as a global destination for gaming and innovation,” he said.
