KUCHING (April 22): Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu has reiterated Sarawak’s commitment to strengthen its position as a regional sporting hub as he welcomed players and officials to the ITF World Junior Team Competition Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying U14 Girls at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre on Tuesday.
His speech was delivered by acting Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Khairul Nizam Morshidi during the opening ceremony.
He described the presence of the teams as reflecting the strength, diversity and unity of tennis across Asia and Oceania, adding that the tournament serves as more than just a platform for high-level competition.
Rentap said Sarawak is proud to host the regional event and hopes participants will enjoy not only competitive tennis but also the state’s rich culture, warm hospitality and natural attractions.
Teams competing in the tournament are from Korea, Kazakhstan, Japan, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong China, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei and host nation Malaysia.
Also present during the opening ceremony was SLTA president Datuk Patrick Liew.
