KUCHING (May 10): Sarawak is exploring a strategic collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to bolster gender equality policies and initiatives across the state.
Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said the proposed partnership aligns with Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to gender inclusivity, especially with the recent establishment of the Gender Equality Unit under the Sarawak Women and Family Department.
“We see great potential for cooperation with UNFPA, especially on issues such as reproductive health, prevention of gender-based violence, and the elimination of harmful practices like child marriage,” she said during a recent visit to the UNFPA Malaysia office in Kuala Lumpur, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
During the working visit, the Sarawak delegation was briefed by UNFPA Malaysia Country representative Dr Julitta Onabanjo and assistant representative Tengku Aira Tengku Razif on the fund’s programmes across more than 150 countries.
Fatimah also took the opportunity to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of the 30% Club Malaysia, held at the Securities Commission Malaysia.
Malaysia currently records 33 per cent female representation on the boards of the top 100 listed public companies — a level acknowledged as a global benchmark.
“This achievement reflects the impact of consistent commitment and cross-sector collaboration in empowering women and raising their participation in leadership roles,” said the minister.
