KUCHING (Oct 23): SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE) is working with global hydrogen technology solutions provider Hydrexia to carry out a proof-of-concept (PoC) clean hydrogen shipment using solid-state technology.
In a statement, the new-energy arm of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) said the initiative represents a key milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen its position as a regional hydrogen hub and demonstrate readiness to export clean hydrogen to international markets.
“The project involves transporting hydrogen in solid form using Hydrexia’s MHX container system, which is designed for safe and scalable transport at ambient pressure and temperature while maintaining high purity standards.
“After extensive studies and engagements with relevant agencies, SEDCE has identified solid-state transport as the most suitable method for small and medium volumes of hydrogen,” said SEDCE chief executive officer Robert Hardin in the statement.
He said the method ensures safe transport conditions and aligns with the highest purity requirements, adding SEDCE is confident that the use of Hydrexia’s MHX unit is the next step forward.
“This proof-of-concept will open new market opportunities for Sarawak.”
The PoC shipment will cover the route from Kuching to Port Klang, Singapore, and Hong Kong before returning to Kuching.
It aims to demonstrate the enhanced Technology Readiness Level of Hydrexia’s MHX container and its ability to transport hydrogen efficiently by road, rail, and sea.
In the same statement, SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain said the collaboration showcases Sarawak’s growing capabilities in clean hydrogen production and export.
“By leveraging Hydrexia’s MHX solid-state technology, we are validating both the technology and the logistics framework required for cross-border hydrogen trade.
“This initiative builds confidence among potential offtakers, regulators, and technology partners, while positioning Sarawak as a trusted hydrogen supplier in the region,” he said.
“It also lays the foundation for scaling up exports in line with Sarawak’s ambition to be a regional hydrogen hub and Malaysia’s broader energy transition goals.”
Meanwhile, Hydrexia chairman and chief executive officer Alex Fang said the company is honoured to partner with SEDCE in what he described as a “historic export milestone”.
“Together, we are proving that the MHX system enables safe, cost-effective cross-border hydrogen transport and creates new opportunities for regional and global markets.”
According to the statement, hydrogen molecules for the PoC shipment are sourced from the Darul Hana H₂ Plant in Kuching.
The hydrogen is transported via tube trailers before undergoing a hydrogenation process, during which the molecules are absorbed into the MHX unit. Once delivered to the offtake destination, the solid hydrogen will be dehydrogenated for use.
SEDC Energy, established in 2019, is tasked with developing Sarawak’s hydrogen value chain. Among its key projects are the Rembus Hydrogen Plant which will supply fuel for the upcoming Kuching Urban Transportation System, and the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub in Bintulu which will support both domestic and export markets.
The corporation said these ongoing initiatives demonstrate Sarawak’s commitment to advancing clean hydrogen development and supporting Malaysia’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
