SIBU (June 17): Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, must continue to uphold the spirit of unity and mutual understanding that has enabled people of different races, cultures and religions to live together harmoniously, said Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew.
Speaking when officiating at Tadika Yakin Diri’s Father’s Day and Hari Gawai Dayak Celebration on Tuesday, Lau said Sarawak’s peaceful and harmonious society should never be taken for granted.
Drawing from his recent visit to Croatia, he said the experience highlighted the significance of unity in maintaining stability and prosperity within a community.
“Croatia was once part of Yugoslavia, which later broke up into several countries following a civil war in the 1990s.
“Looking at their history, we can better appreciate what we have in Malaysia and Sarawak today.
“One important lesson from other countries is the need for people to live together, understand each other and respect one another.
“Without understanding and harmony, it is difficult to build a peaceful community and nation,” he said.
Lau, who is also YMCA Sibu chairman, said organisations such as YMCA play an essential role in promoting social cohesion and fostering stronger community ties through educational and cultural initiatives.
Although YMCA is a Christian-based organisation, he stressed that its mission is to contribute positively to society and serve the wider community regardless of background.
“We are proud that YMCA has received support from generations of families over the years.
“This reflects the trust that parents have placed in us to help nurture and educate their children,” he said.
Lau thanked parents for their continued support of Tadika Yakin Diri and YMCA’s educational programmes, noting that their involvement contributes significantly to the development of young children.
On the Father’s Day celebration, Lau said the occasion served as a reminder of the responsibilities carried by fathers and parents in shaping the future of their children.
“Beyond the celebrations, what matters most is that we fulfil our roles and responsibilities as parents.
“When we do what we are supposed to do, things will work out well,” he said.
Lau also expressed appreciation to the teachers, YMCA members and board of directors for their dedication and contributions towards the development of the kindergarten and its students.
The event brought together parents, teachers and children in a festive atmosphere to celebrate Father’s Day and Hari Gawai Dayak while strengthening community bonds.
Earlier, Tadika Yakin Diri Headmistress Teresa Lau said the celebration was organised not only to honour fathers for their invaluable role in nurturing and supporting their children, but also to foster closer ties between parents, teachers and the kindergarten community.
She said the joint Father’s Day and Hari Gawai Dayak celebration reflected the spirit of unity and cultural diversity that Tadika Yakin Diri strives to instil in its pupils from an early age.
“Through events like this, children learn to appreciate the sacrifices made by their parents while also gaining a deeper understanding of the different cultures and traditions that make Sarawak unique,” she said.
Teresa also expressed appreciation to parents for their unwavering support and cooperation, which have contributed significantly to the success of the kindergarten’s educational and co-curricular programmes.
